About the community
Ecoins is one of the most successful Costa Rican social currencies, used by a network that values sustainability by incentivizing a circular economy. It emerges from the creation of a National law of integral residue management (Law 8839). It has established a public-private partnership with the Ministry of Health and integrates the National Recycling Strategy with support of private companies ranging from restaurants and hotels to book shops and food and beverage enterprises. It currently operates in Costa Rica, Panamá, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Perú.
Ecoins team is currently collaborating with Cambiatus to explore innovative uses of our technology for their project.
Objectives
It seeks to promote the correct disposition of valuable materials and promote a green and solidarity economy through an incentive plan and public-private alliances that collaborate to accelerate the processes of cultural change.
How does it work
Users or “ecofans” are encouraged to take their recyclable materials to authorized recycling centers, but preparing them so they arrive #LimpiosSecosSeparados (clean, dried, separated) and therefore can be better processed. Ecofans earn ecoins and are able to exchange them by discount coupons applicable to products and services from ecoins sponsors, available on their app and website.
